The Washington State Lottery has created a distinct lottery, “A Heroes Thanks,” for DOD beneficiaries who got their COVID vaccination at DOD facilities. This includes members of the military (active and retired), dependent family members, and DoD civilian personnel.

Beneficiaries must “opt-in,” or sign up on-line to participate in the lottery, and can begin doing so today. This lottery is also for WA National Guard and VA beneficiaries who received vaccinations at their respective facilities.

For DOD beneficiaries: to “opt-in” to the lottery, go to https://coronavirus.wa.gov/aheroesthanks where you will be asked to provide this information:

“A HEROES THANKS” COVID-19 VACCINE APPRECIATION PROMOTION Q&A

Eligibility for a person receiving a recommended COVID-19 vaccination from either a Veterans Affairs or National Guard health care facility.


Eligibility for the vaccine promotion is available for Washington residents or persons under permanent assignment orders to a location in Washington, their beneficiaries and/or caregivers, and Department of Veterans Affairs (Veterans Affairs) or National Guard staff, who have received at least one dose of a recommended COVID-19 vaccination from a Veterans Affairs health care facility or National Guard health care facility, subject to the following conditions:

Presumptive winners will be selected based on vaccination records held by Veterans Affairs or National Guard that are provided to the Washington State Department of Health (Department of Health) in de-identified numerical form as of 11:59 p.m. on the Sunday before the drawing date. The state of Washington, Washington’s Lottery, the Department of Health, and vaccine providers are not responsible for errors or omissions related to any person’s vaccination record.


Presumptive winners must provide proof of:
Current Washington residency. Residency may be proved by presenting either a valid Washington driver’s license, a valid Washington identification card, or another form of government-issued identification that includes the person’s name, address, and photograph. The State reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to accept alternate proof of Washington residency; OR Active duty status and permanent assignment orders to Washington.


Persons under the age of 18 on the date of the drawing are not eligible to win a prize.
Incarcerated persons are not eligible to win a prize. For purposes of this promotion, “incarcerated” means a person committed to total confinement in any state, federal, city, or county correctional institution or facility on the date of the drawing.


Employees of the Washington State Department of Health; employees of the Governor’s Office; employees of Consolidated Technology Services, calling itself Washington Technology Solutions or WaTech (WaTech); employees of Washington’s Lottery; members of the Lottery Commission; and any spouse, child, brother, sister, or parent residing as a member of the same household with such employee or Commission member, are not eligible to win a prize.


Eligibility for a person receiving a recommended vaccination from a Department of Defense health care facility.


Eligibility for the vaccine promotion is available for members of the military (both active and retired), their dependent family members, Department of Defense civilian personnel, and Department of Defense contractors, who have received at least one dose of a recommended COVID-19 vaccination from a Department of Defense health care facility, subject to the following conditions:

Presumptive winners will be selected based on vaccination status entered by voluntary opt-in attestation and provided to the Department of Health as of 6:59 a.m. on the Monday before the drawing date. The state of Washington, Washington’s Lottery, the Department of Health, WaTech, and vaccine providers are not responsible for errors or omissions related to any person’s opt-in attestation. Proof of:


Current Washington residency. Residency may be proved by presenting either a valid Washington driver’s license, a valid Washington identification card, or another form of government-issued identification that includes the person’s name, address, and photograph. The State reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to accept alternate proof of Washington residency; OR
Active duty status and permanent assignment orders to Washington.

Cash Prizes
Cash prizes for drawings 1 and 2 shall be one (1) prize of $100,000 per drawing. The cash prize for drawing 3 shall be one (1) prize of $250,000.

Merchandise Prizes: Merchandise prizes for drawings 1 and 2 shall be:

Five (5) $250 Amazon gift cards per drawing; and
Five (5) $100 Washington state parks gift cards.
Unclaimed merchandise prizes from drawings 1 and 2 will be made available for drawing 3.

Winning a Prize
Presumptive winners will be randomly selected from a list of randomly generated numbers assigned to eligible persons who have received at least one dose of a recommended COVID-19 vaccination and whose vaccination information was provided to the Department of Health as required by the terms and conditions of this promotion. The Department of Health will assign the random numbers and provide the list of numbers to Washington’s Lottery to select the presumptive winning numbers.

Presumptive winners will be contacted following each drawing, and must agree to the following in order to receive a prize:

Veterans Affairs, National Guard, or Department of Defense (as appropriate) may release the person’s identity and contact information to the Department of Health and/or Washington’s Lottery; and
Washington’s Lottery may release the person’s name, military affiliation, city, prize amount or type, and vaccination status to the media and public.
In order to win a prize, a presumptive winner must:

Meet all eligibility requirements;
Claim the prize from Washington’s Lottery no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Monday following the drawing; and
Agree to the terms and conditions herein.
Winners are responsible for all taxes and fees, and any debts pursuant to RCW 67.70.255.

Limit of one entry and one cash prize per person regardless of the number of recommended COVID-19 vaccinations received during the eligibility period.

“Recommended COVID-19 vaccination” means a dose of a vaccine authorized by the FDA to prevent COVID-19 and provided according to CDC guidelines.

No purchase necessary to enter or win.

Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible persons receiving at least one recommended COVID-19 vaccination during the eligibility period.
