Rainy season has arrived in Washington State, and it is hard to keep the kids occupied during these next few months when you can rarely go outside. Here are a few ideas for activities to do with your kids around the Joint Base Lewis McCord area. Plus, some things you can do indoors at home, all recommended by Military Spouse blogger, Olivia Michelle.

JBLM Children’s Museum
2275 Liggett Ave
Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA 98433

This brand new 5 Million dollar children’ museum is the first museum on a military installation in the world. It is montessori style with multiple play and craft areas. There are indoor climbing structures, water play, a sensory room, a gym, and more. There is even a  large lobby with couches and chairs if you need a spot to sit. Admission is donation based, so pay whatever you’d like to pay. Open play is Monday, Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. View more info on the website HERE. Information on additional museums in Washington State, can be found HERE.

Craft Idea from Messy Little Monster

Arts & Crafts

Arts and crafts is something simple and easy that can keep your kids entertained with very few supplies. Look around your house and I bet you can find glue, paper, crayons, and a pair of scissors. Give your kids a theme like “space” or the “zoo” and tell them to be creative. With the holidays coming up you can have them make special cards of crafts for loved ones to include with their gift. Pro tip: Look inside your recycle bin for things like paper towel rolls that can also be used when crafting.

Defy Indoor Trampoline Park

Defy Indoor Trampoline Park
1680 S Mildred Street
Tacoma WA 98465

If your kids need to get out some energy, take them to this indoor trampoline park. There are plenty of spots to run, jump, and play games like dodgeball. There are even some areas for smaller kids. Special socks are required and are available to purchase at the location. Tickets range from $11-23 per child depending how much time you’d like to spend inside. Ages 2 and under are FREE. View more info and purchase tickets on the website HERE.

Family game night for rainy season

Family Game Night

If you’re looking for an activity that the entire family can do together, have a family game night! Choose 2-3 games to play together. Our family usually does this once a week and it is always a good time. A few of our favorite board games include Trouble, Don’t Break the Ice, and Scene It. If you don’t have many board games there are a ton of different kid friendly games you can play with just one deck of cards. A few of our favorites are Go fish, spoons, and “JK”. You can Google how to play.

Visit your Local Library

Libraries offer more than just books. There are lots of libraries to visit in surrounding cities and two libraries on base. Library cards are FREE to obtain (most require proof of address and a photo ID). Libraries often offer events such as story time and have areas to hang out in to support your needs. There are computers, reading nooks, study areas, and most have a children’s area. You can check out books, audiobooks, movies, games, and even local museum passes.

Go Bowling
Bowling is not as popular of an activity as it once was but it offers a fun family activity for all ages. Most bowling alleys also have ramps available for young children, so all they have to do is give the ball a little push. The Bowling Lanes on Fort Lewis are currently open.
